Period Kitchen Design

The owners of this period property opted for a simple colour palette and traditional style for their new kitchen.

It’s a fresh, yet classic treatment that allows features such as their new Aga and original oak beams and casement windows to really stand out.

Designed by influential architect, Richard Goulburn Lovell, the property combines Arts and Crafts styling with a Tudor vernacular. Long but relatively narrow proportions and leaded light windows could make for a dark interior, but the new white-based colour scheme and lighting lifts it dramatically.

Above the bar and seating area, pendant lighting with a brushed metal finish provides soft task lighting, whilst recessed energy efficient LED spots are the perfect solution elsewhere and fit neatly amongst the beams.

As keen cooks, an Aga was top of the list. It provides a stunning centrepiece whilst an additional built-in oven offers the ultimate combination. Further items on the owners’ wishlist included a large American fridge freezer - chosen in the same glossy black as the Aga.

Clever storage was also high on the agenda. In addition to the cabinets, the kitchen features open shelving. Placing everyday ingredients in Kilner jars that are close to hand, rather than behind cupboard doors, is convenient and makes for a great display. Pull-out baskets for fresh items, a bottle rack and a handy shelf above the Aga have all been incorporated into the design too.

The renovation also makes great use of a mixture of surfaces and materials. Contrasting shiny granite with wood, textured tiles with painted surfaces and adding brushed metal details in places has all contributed to the resulting style which is sympathetic to the property’s design and heritage, timeless, and above all highly practical.

“I’d just like to say how impressed we’ve been by Colbran & Wingrove and everyone involved in working on our kitchen. Your team have all been so hard working and respectful. Every night we came home to a tidy kitchen, no matter what stage of the process they were at. I absolutely love my new kitchen (sorry ‘our’ new kitchen!) and can’t wait to gather family and friends in our new hub of the house. Thank you once again.” Sandy, homeowner.
